What is shadow AI?
Shadow AI is the use of AI tools, models and agents inside an organization without the security or IT team’s knowledge or approval. It is the AI version of shadow IT: a chatbot in the browser, a coding assistant, or an agent connected to company data.
How it works
The risk comes from what goes into these tools and what they can reach: customer data pasted into a prompt, source code shared with an unvetted service, or an agent granted broad access with no accountable owner.
Banning AI rarely works. Most programs publish an AI use policy, discover which tools are in use from web gateway and CASB data, approve the tools that meet the policy, and coach people who use unapproved ones.
Why it matters
Every company now has two workforces: people, and the AI they run. Security teams need to see both, and each AI agent needs a person who is accountable for it.
How Living Security helps
Living Security AI Agent Governance shows the shadow AI from your web gateway or CASB, holds every agent to an accountable owner, and scores AI misuse in the same Human Risk Index. A nudge, not a ban: approved use counts as protective.
