Data loss prevention

Tools and policies that detect and stop sensitive data leaving an organization by email, web, cloud or device.

Also called DLP

What is data loss prevention (DLP)?

Data loss prevention (DLP) is the set of tools and policies that find sensitive data, such as customer records, health data or source code, and detect or block it when it leaves through email, web uploads, cloud apps, AI prompts or removable media.

How it works

DLP classifies data by content and context, then applies rules: warn, block, encrypt or log. It runs on endpoints, in email, in the network and in cloud apps.

Most DLP events are mistakes, not theft. Repeat events from the same people point to where coaching or access changes would help most.

Why it matters

DLP produces many alerts, and most involve well-meaning people. Turning those alerts into behavior change reduces both the risk and the alert volume.

How Living Security helps

Living Security reads DLP signals into the Human Risk Index, so repeat data handling risk triggers coaching or a control change through a playbook.
