Security culture

The shared attitudes, habits and norms that shape how people in an organization act on security.

What is security culture?

Security culture is the set of shared attitudes, habits and norms that shape how people in an organization think and act about security. In a strong culture, people report suspicious activity quickly, ask before they share, and see security as part of their job.

How it works

Culture shows up in behavior: how fast people report phishing, whether managers talk about security, and whether people who make a mistake come forward. Surveys measure attitudes; behavior data shows whether they hold up.

Programs build culture by recognizing good behavior, coaching rather than blaming, giving people their own view of where they stand, and making managers part of the effort.

Why it matters

Controls cannot cover every decision people make. A culture where people act as the strongest defense catches what technology misses, and makes every other security investment work harder.
