What is secure behavior management (SBM)?
Secure behavior management (SBM) is Gartner’s term for the shift from security awareness training to programs that measure security behavior and change it. The idea is that what people do, and the risk it creates, matters more than what they completed.
How it works
An SBM program uses behavioral data to decide who needs which intervention, delivers it at the moment it is relevant, and measures the change in behavior afterward. Gartner set out the shift in its September 2026 note, “Ditch Security Awareness and Adopt AI-Powered Secure Behavior Management”.
Human risk management delivers secure behavior management and adds the other two dimensions of risk: the threats aimed at each person and the access they hold.
Why it matters
Buyers who follow Gartner research often search for SBM first. The goal is the same as human risk management: fewer incidents caused by people, and evidence that the program is working.
How Living Security helps
Living Security delivers Secure Behavior Management through Human Risk Management: behavior, threat and access signals in one Human Risk Index, and playbooks that act on it.
